The Main Post Office in Katowice will be revitalized. On October 2 this year, Poczta Polska and Polski Holding Nieruchomości signed a letter of intent on the joint property development at ul. Pocztowa 9 in Katowice.
A modern educational center may be built in the building of the Main Post Office, and the residents of Katowice will decide what it will include. The building will combine the post office functions with educational and cultural activities.
“We want the historic post office buildings to serve the Polish economy and local community the best way possible, so that the Main Post Office offers the residents of Katowice not only 24/7 access to postal services, but also educational and cultural services. We want to implement this project together with Polski Holding Nieruchomości,” said Przemysław Sypniewski, President of the Management Board of Poczta Polska.
The building at ul. Pocztowa 9 was built in the modernist style at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and then rebuilt in the neoclassical style in the interwar period. It is listed in the register of monuments kept by the Monuments Conservation Office of the City of Katowice. Its entire area is ca. 6,000 sq.m., of which 2,500 sq.m. is being used for the purposes of Katowice 1 Post Office. The property is situated in the heart of Katowice, near the market square, Silesian Theater, railway station and the city hall. The “Spodek” concert hall, the University of Silesia and the Museum of the History of Katowice are located within one kilometer radius.
“Katowice is an attractive market where we would like to increase our presence. The purpose of establishing cooperation with Poczta Polska is to give new life to a historic building located in the city center. Within the next months, we will be working on creating an interesting concept for transforming the building at ul. Pocztowa. We are aware that the key to successful revitalization is understanding the needs of local communities and cooperation of all parties involved in the process,” said Tomasz Górnicki, Vice-President of the Management Board for Investment, Polski Holding Nieruchomości.
Poczta Polska owns 867 historic properties throughout the country. Over 40% of this year’s budget for all renovation works will be allocated to their modernization and renovation. Over the past 4 years, over PLN 54 million has been spent on their renovation, and apart from that, almost 2,000 facilities have been renovated for a total amount of over PLN 75 million.
